Session Title:

Photosynthesis: understanding and progress in its manipulation

Keywords:

Photosynthetic efficiency, Metabolism, Synthetic biology, Photoprotection

Abstract:

Our understanding of the regulation of solar energy capture, electron transfer and reduction of atmospheric CO2 in photosynthesis is such that researchers can now manipulate photosynthetic metabolism to improve yields. At the international level, there has been a major effort from the scientific community to generate and support projects aimed at improving photosynthesis. Most strategies to date have considered synthetic biology approaches to regain losses in photosynthetic efficiency via recycling of carbon back into the system or reducing energetic losses via conservative down-regulation of photoprotection mechanisms. The aim of this session brings to light the latest advances in the comprehension of photosynthesis and new strategies for its manipulation as a robust trait for plant and algae culture.
